In 1983, a group inspired by the mission of Habitat for Humanity International came together to form Dayton Ohio Habitat for Humanity, the first affiliate in Ohio.
Members of College Hill Community United Presbyterian Church, which is still at the same location, with the same spiritual leader, Robert E. Jones, led the initiative to start the affiliate. College Hill published the first newsletters, hosted meetings, and provided the community leadership to begin the mission of providing decent, affordable homes for low income families.
As stated in our original articles of incorporation, our purpose is still to "Provide specific projects in Habitat construction or re-construction, to acquire housing, to develop moderate and adequate housing, and make same available to persons in need at a cost they can afford."
The vision and dedication of the founding board members who birthed Dayton Ohio Habitat for Humanity should not go unrecognized. Successive board members, staff and volunteers kept that vision alive and growing, from the first home completed in 1986, through the completion of the 178th house in 2011, and on to today.
Throughout the years, we have built or rehabbed homes in 10 communities throughout Montgomery county including: Dayton, Riverside, Harrison Township, West Carrollton, Trotwood, Englewood, Miamisburg, Kettering, Union, and Germantown.
The collective hand-up offered by all those involved in the mission of Dayton Habitat has contributed to improving the lives of families from many different walks of life.
