Our History

In 1983, a group of people inspired by the mission of Habitat for Humanity International came together to form the first affiliate in Ohio: Dayton Ohio Habitat for Humanity.

The vision and dedication of the founding board members who birthed the organization should not go unrecognized. Successive board members, staff and volunteers have kept that vision alive and growing, from the first house completed in 1986 for the Walker family in Dayton, through the completion of the 100th house in 2004 for the Thornton family in Trotwood, and on to today. In that time, we have also built homes in Miamisburg, Riverside, Germantown, and West Carrollton. All the cuts, bruises, sweat and tears over the years have paid off in changed lives for our partner families. Everyone associated with our progress over the first 20 years should pat themselves on the back for a job well done.

Our Future

All families deserve a safe, decent place to live, yet for many that dream is as hard to reach as ever. To provide increasing help to our community, the DOHFH Board of Trustees and staff have laid out strategic goals with the intention of growing the capacity of the affiliate. All arms of DOHFH are working to move toward 20 houses a year starting in 2008. In addition to the increased construction, we will need to increase our volunteer base, expand development efforts, build more and stronger community partnerships, increase family selection and support, grow our site selection, and build on our existing staff.
