Engineering and Industrial Technologies Division at Sinclair Community College to Build Two Homes(DAYTON, Ohio) — The Engineering and Industrial Technologies Division at Sinclair Community College has reached an agreement with Habitat for Humanity of Dayton to build two homes beginning in 2006. One home will be sited locally in Montgomery County and another tentatively designated for an as yet undetermined location in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The two homes, in conjunction with Habitat’s national Operation Home Delivery program, will be constructed at Sinclair’s Eaker Street lab in downtown Dayton utilizing students and faculty in Sinclair’s Architectural Engineering Technology and HVAC programs and Dayton area volunteers. The first home, to be built May 20, will be placed at a site on Little Meadows Drive in Riverside. The second, targeted for a Hurricane Katrina re-building site, is co-sponsored by LexisNexis and other area businesses. "We’re pleased to be partnering with LexisNexis and Sinclair Community College to build these two homes. If all goes as planned, we expect that this will be an ongoing relationship that will build more homes in the months and years ahead," said Frank Gorman, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity in Dayton. "I'm sure LexisNexis Cares volunteers will give generously of their time and talents to make these homes a reality," said Kurt Sanford, president and CEO of Corporate and Federal Markets, LexisNexis. “Many employees have used company-paid time off to build Habitat for Humanity homes for the local community, and will gladly embrace the opportunity to help with the Gulf Coast rebuilding effort.” Sinclair President Steven Lee Johnson requested that the second home be sited in Louisiana in symbolic support of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. Its chancellor, Dr. Walter G. Bumphus, is a close friend and mentor, and Sinclair had pledged its support for the system in response to the hurricane’s widespread damage throughout that state. "I was in conversation with Dr. Bumphus within hours after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast," said President Johnson. "I pledged to him our personal support in helping the Louisiana Community and Technical College System recover. Placing this Habitat home in Baton Rouge, the college system’s home, is symbolic of our making good on that pledge of support. We expect to do much more in the months ahead." Gorman said Habitat for Humanity of Dayton is seeking additional sponsors, donors and volunteers for the homes’ construction. The 1,100 square-foot homes include a living room, kitchen, dining area, bathroom and three bedrooms. Its walls will be built at Sinclair’s Eaker Street lab and then transported by truck to the Dayton and Baton Rouge assembly sites for construction. "At this time, we are seeking additional sponsors, donors and volunteers to assist Sinclair students and faculty in the construction of these homes," said Gorman. "There really is no gift of time, talent or treasure that is too small." Dr. George Sehi, Sinclair Dean of Engineering and Industrial Technologies, said the partnership with Habitat for Humanity is a great hands-on opportunity for students and faculty."We prepare our engineering technology students for real world jobs and careers. What better way is there to do that and at the same time give back to the community something of real value to both families and in rehabilitating neighborhoods?" Marilyn Rodney, Sinclair’s Service Learning Program Coordinator, said Service Learning is a teaching method that combines service with academic instruction focusing on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility. "Service Learning programs involve students in organized community service that addresses local needs, while developing their academic skills, sense of civic responsibility, and commitment to the community."
