Construction

Construction typically begins in March and continues through December. Dayton Habitat relies heavily upon volunteer labor during construction.

The opportunities for volunteer involvement are considerable. A partial list includes:

  • Concrete Work
  • Carpentry
  • Roofing
  • Siding Installation
  • Drywall Installation
  • Painting
  • Wood Trim
  • Carpet Laying

The amount of time and the activity you commit to is strictly up to you. Whatever your talents, we have a place for you.

Working At The Build Site

Our houses are primarily built by volunteers, from the ground breaking to the move-in of the Partner Families. One of the great things about working on the build site is actually seeing the tangible results of your labor. Don’t worry if you’ve never worked on a construction crew. You will be guided along the way by experienced personnel. In many cases, you will be working along side the Partner Family that will eventually own the house.

We ask that you bring your own hand tools, if you have them. If you use ours, we ask that you remember to turn them in at the end of your work session. You should wear appropriate clothing for work that is sometimes dirty, including sturdy shoes. Avoid wearing good jewelry and/or dangling earrings.

Be sure to lock your car at the build site and take care what you leave visible on the seat or floor. Upon arrival, check in with the construction staff and sign the Volunteer Log Sheet.

Youth ages 14-17 wanting to volunteer should check out our Youth Involvement page, and anyone younger than 14 should contact the Volunteer Services Coordinator to review what volunteer opportunities may be available for their age group.
