Volunteers are the heart of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton! Our homes are built almost entirely by volunteers and our ReStore utilizes volunteers every day. We could not serve families without our wonderful volunteers!

Ways to Volunteer

There are numerous ways to get involved with Habitat! Many volunteers enjoy working on the build site for homes, but there are other ways to help too. The ReStore depends on volunteers each day, and we also have several committees that are made up of volunteers. Click on the options below to check out the many ways you can help local families!

Are you looking for a fun and engaging team building activity with immediate, tangible results? Join us on-site or at the ReStore as a HabiTEAM today!  Corporate teams, church groups, sports teams, book clubs, school groups, fraternities/sororities, families, and friends are all welcome.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton’s HabiTEAM volunteer days are not your average team building activity.  HabiTEAM volunteer days provide your employees or team with a change of pace from the everyday while offering a hand-up, not a hand-out, to a local family seeking affordable homeownership.

Build Site HabiTEAM(s) – We build year-round, Tuesday through Saturday, throughout Montgomery and Greene Counties.  We are generally able to accommodate 6-8 volunteers at a time on a build site, depending on the stage of construction. To accommodate additional volunteers, you may request multiple days or multiple build sites. Saturdays are very popular and fill up quickly. If your team is available during the week, please consider volunteering on a weekday.

ReStoreHabiTEAM(s) -Our ReStore Staff will develop a pre-planned project for your group to work on at the ReStore, if reserved within two weeks of the reserved volunteer date. Group captains or supervisors may be required to assist with the ReStore Projects. Our ReStore can accommodate a maximum of 15 volunteers each day and volunteer groups are required to volunteer for a minimum of four (4) hours on their volunteer date.

To reserve the ReStore or a Build Site for your team, please download and fill out the HabiTEAM Registration Form. The Volunteer Services Department will confirm a volunteer date to accommodate your team and send you a confirmation email and Volunteer Hub Registration Instructions.

ALL Habitat Volunteers/Team Members/Group Members are REQUIRED to register and sign-up online through Volunteer Hub. Any reserved slots which are not filled one week prior to the reserved volunteer date will be released for other volunteers.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton appreciates all of our volunteers and we do our best to make sure everyone has an enjoyable and productive volunteer day at the ReStore and/or on-site at one of our Build Sites. The key to having a great volunteer experience is safety. Due to the hazards of construction work and hazards at the ReStore, there are some limitations and restrictions for any volunteer under the age of 18.

Additional Requirements for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton Minor Volunteers

  • ALL Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton Minor Volunteers are REQUIRED to register and sign-up online through Volunteer Hub.
  • Your parent/guardian must complete a Minor Liability Waiver and email/fax it to the Volunteer Services Coordinator prior to your first volunteer day.
  • Registering and signing up on Volunteer Hub does not fulfill this requirement.
  • Minor Volunteers must inform the Volunteer Services Coordinator of every Volunteer Event/Date they register for to ensure the ReStore Staff and/or Build Site Leader are made aware of the minor volunteer and can assign appropriate tasks per our liability insurance.

 

Ages 13 and Under

Our liability insurance does not allow us to accommodate minor volunteers under the age of 14 at our Build Sites or the ReStore.
Off-site events or projects may be available.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton offers many different volunteer opportunities other than the Build Site. Our additional volunteer opportunities vary in time commitment and availability but include; office work, the ReStore, Volunteer-Staff Led Committees, Special Events, Parking Lot Builds/Blitz Builds, and Panel Moves.

Advocate & Volunteer

Family Advocates work directly with partner families through their journey to homeownership.  Some key responsibilities are building relationships with families, helping educate the families on responsible home ownership, mortgages and social services and supporting the family emotionally and spiritually.

The commitment lasts from 18 to 24 months with about one hour a month of contact. Meeting times and locations are agreed upon by the Family Advocate and their partner family. As a Family Advocate, we match you with a family that is compatible with your location, time, schedule, and interests.

Advocates are actively recruited year-round but may not be assigned a partner family immediately.

ReStore Volunteers

ReStore volunteers assist with sales, inventory, cleaning and stocking the sales floor and warehouse, loading and unloading donated items, and customer service. The revenue generated at the ReStore allows Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton to build additional Habitat Homes every year!

Committees are at the heart of what makes Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton successful!

We appreciate all the contributions of our committee members and all they do for each of these departments.  If you are interested in getting involved with Habitat for Humanity, beyond the build site, please contact us and we can match you with the group that meets your talents, and  desire to contribute!

Family Selection Committee

The Family Selection Committee volunteers help determine the best candidates to accept into our Partner Family Home Ownership program.  The committee helps to identify prospective families, reviews applications and interviews applicants.  Committee members also help to develop structure and set parameters within the Partner Family program and the Family Services Department.

Family Support Committee

The Family Support Committee helps guide Partner Families through the process of earning the opportunity to purchase a Habitat for Humanity home.  The committee assesses the progress of our families and makes recommendations regarding their status in the partner family program.  The committee also works directly with our Partner families and provide support throughout the sweat equity and educational process.  Family Support Committee members receive training and assistance throughout their commitment.

Field Operations Committee

Field Operations Committee develops the affiliate’s standardized house plans and advises on all phases of construction. This committee includes design, construction, and real estate professionals and people with knowledge of building materials, practices and codes. The committee is responsible for identifying and acquiring property for new construction and renovation throughout Greene and Montgomery Counties. Each site must be reviewed to ensure compliance with Habitat standards and guidelines and all local building and zoning codes.Time commitment is dependent on role taken by member, but averages about 3-5 hours per month.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee supports the Finance Director in monitoring the fiscal operation of Habitat of Greater Dayton and planning for its future. Members include active and retired business people, including CPAs, accountants, bankers, and corporate executives. Time commitment of 3-6 hours per month.

Volunteer Engagement Committee

The Volunteer Engagement Committee supports Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton volunteers and helps to ensure volunteers are recognized accordingly for donating their time, energy, and talent. Committee members represent Build Site volunteers, ReStore volunteers, HabiTEAM volunteer groups, and behind-the-scenes volunteers. The committee assists with recruitment; helps plan and execute the annual volunteer recognition event; and works to improve the Habitat volunteer experience. The committee also assists with special events such as the Gala, Bike & Build, and visiting mission trip groups. Committee members should be active volunteers who are willing to talk to fellow volunteers candidly, while being creative problem solvers. Time commitment of 1-3 hours per month.

Signature Event / Gala Committee

Each year Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton hosts a Gala to raise funds and awareness for Habitat’s mission.  This wouldn’t be possible without our wonderful Gala Committee.  The committee plans the gala throughout the year.  They scout locations, acquire donated items for auction, secure corporate sponsorships, plan out décor, choose catering options and more.  If you like to plan events, this could be the committee for you.

ReStore Committee

The Restore provides the affiliate with working capital by which they will fund the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton.  The goal of the Restore committee is to suggest ways to increase ReStore productivity, donation procurement, and profitability.  The ReStore Committee treats all subjects related to the store including advertising and marketing opportunities, to the  consideration of new directions and retail environments. 

Women Build

Women Build is a national program dedicated to inspiring and empowering women to build better communities.  Each year a single mother in the Habitat homeownership program is chosen as the Women Build Family.  The committee works to raise funding and recruit volunteers to build the family’s home.  Women Build Committee is looking for women who are active in the community, enjoy event planning, can recruit volunteers, secure sponsorships and have a passion for supporting women.
